Believe it or not, Facebook Chat now allows you to use the profile picture of any user, event or official page as an emoticon. Emoticons no longer have to be anonymous smiley faces. They can be of characters you actually know or can identify. This means you can make a Facebook emoticon out of your cousin, best friend, Justin Bieber, Kanye West, President Obama or Oprah. We will tell you exactly how to go about creating a FB emoticon:

1.	Go to the profile, fan page or event page of your choice

2.	Locate the URL of that page. Then find the username or profile ID at the end of the URL
(i.e. “VinDiesel” from http://www.facebook.com/VinDiesel or “droz” from http://www.facebook.com/droz)

3.	Place the name or number in double brackets like so [[VinDiesel]]

4.	Enter that code into a Facebook Chat or message field. It may not appear at first, but once you have sent it the bracketed letters/numbers will appear as that person, page or event’s profile picture.

While these custom emoticons will display as photos on the web, they will appear as their bracketed string when viewed through a Facebook app. They also cannot be used in status updates, comments or wall posts yet. However, stay tuned, because you know how often Facebook upgrades things and adds new features. Because profile pictures and usernames are public, pulling photos as emoticons technically doesn’t violate privacy, and there’s no way to opt out of having your face used. Have fun making custom Facebook emoticons!

Last year many of us received news and messages letting us know that our group on Facebook was scheduled to be archived. This of course occurred when Facebook decided yet again to update (change) their layout yet AGAIN. Whether you’re a group owner or an admin you probably got this notification more than once. This was a controlled upgrade by Facebook in an effort not to disrupt the site too much by having everyone upgrading their Facebook groups all at once. This is similar to how they did the Page migration.

If you never selected the Upgrade option for your Group then your photos and discussions may have been lost. There was also concern as to whether all the members would carry over into the new group or not, but luckily they did. Those that were banned from the groups didn’t make it into the switch either so that’s cool.
One new feature with Facebook groups that many people probably don’t care too much for is that every time a wall post is made or anything is done in the group, members will get an e-mail notification. That may have only lasted for so long though because I think recently Facebook got the message and cut down on all the e-mail notifications. Before then (or still today) users have to go and manually adjust their settings if they don’t want constant Group updates/notifications sent to them. This is done in your settings. Just like everything else on Facebook (i.e. Chat, Privacy, notifications, etc..) you have to manually adjust it or turn it off if you don’t want to be bothered. An easy way to customize who you will and won’t get all the e-mail notifications from is by going to Account > Account Settings > Notifications > Change E-mail settings for individual groups. This should bring you to a list of all your groups and the option to select or unselect boxes.

The Group change also made it so you have to set up a group e-mail since Facebook converted their old inboxes into the new message system. You can only send out mass messages to group members now if the group has less than 250 members. Enjoy your new Groups or if you have a change of heart try creating a Fan Page. Check out the FB Emoticons fan page we converted to once our Group was being “upgraded”.

Are smileys and emoticons even necessary for chatting on Facebook? There are those who may feel as though they aren’t. Then there are those who feel they are and use them all the time. Even Facebook users who utilize the chat box and don’t believe the characters are that necessary, may use emoticons more than they realize. When you type a regular smiley :) :-) or =) it automatically turns into the smiles emoticons. The same goes for a sad face, glasses and the heart.

Think of the words you’ll save sometimes when using Facebook chat emoticons in your chat box. Facebook chat sessions become even better with the emoticons. Some of the cooler emoticons you might impress your buddy with are: the curly lips, shark, Chris Putnam, robot, penguin and the angel. All of these and more can be found here. <--- a complete list of Facebook emoticons. They symbols are cool to use also. So don’t fall into the belief that smileys and emoticons are no fun and they aren’t that useful. Just learn some new ones yourself and try them out next time you’re chatting. You’ll see the enjoyment you get once you start using them more often and your chat buddies will be tickled.

On October 28, 2003, a Harvard sophomore named Mark Zuckerberg wrote Facemash, the predecessor to Facebook. The site, comparable to Hot or Not, used photos from the “online facebooks of nine houses” and placed two next to each other at a time asking users to select the hotter person. Zuckerberg did this by hacking into protected areas of Harvard’s computer network and copied the houses’ private dorm ID images. Within its first four hours online Facemash attracted 450 visitors and 22,000 photo-views.

During the next semester Zuckerberg started writing code for a new web site in January 2004. In February 2004 he launched “TheFacebook” which was originally located at thefacebook.com. Almost a week after the site was launched three Harvard seniors accused the facebook creator of intentionally misleading them into believing that he would help them build a social network called HarvardConnection.com, while instead he was using their ideas to build a competing product. The seniors complained to the Harvard Crimson, and the newspaper began an investigation. Later those three people filed a lawsuit against Zuckerberg and subsequently settled.

At first the site membership was restricted to Harvard College students, and within the first month over half of the undergrad population was registered. In March it expanded to Standord, Columbia and Yale. Then it opened to other Ivy League schools and gradually most universities in Canada and the U.S. By the summer of 2004 Facebook was incorporated, and the entrepreneur Sean Parker, who had been informally advising Zuckerberg, became the company president. A high school version was launched in September 2005. A year later it was opened to everyone of age 13 and older with a valid e-mail address. Microsoft purchased 1.6% share of Facebook for $240 million in October 2007. In June 2011 Facebook reached one trillion pageviews, making it the most visited web site in the world, and as of July the social networking site has more than 800 million active users.

There is a type of online advertising that has been designed specifically for sites like Facebook. It is referred to as social network advertising. This form of advertising focuses on social networking sites. One of the major benefits of advertising on a site like Facebook is that advertisers are able to take advantage of the users demographic information and target their ads appropriately. For instance, if your profile says that you’re a single Christian, living in Chicago who enjoys reading as a hobby, an advertisement on your wall would likely be for a Singles’ Christian Chicago Book Club. That’s just an example though.

In 2008, eMarkerter predicted that $2 billion would be spent on social network advertising across the world and that this market would continue to grow. They projected that it would reach $3.8 billion in spending by the year 2011, with a majority of it coming from the U.S.. Well here we are now, and although I don’t have the exact numbers as far as spending goes, I can tell you it has definitely grown.

The three major classifications of Social Network Advertising include:

Direct Advertising based on your network of friends: An advertisement or message in your news feed can pop up based on an action your friend has taken. This is the most controversial category as it raises privacy concerns.

Direct Advertising placed on your social networking site: Banner ads pop up on the social networking site. It is more traditional web advertising and minimally effective. These type of ads are also placed by individual developers on their application pages.

Indirect Advertising through Groups or Pages: A company will create a page or group that users can choose to join. It is used to build up fans or subscribers to increase brand awareness, promote a new product or market a contest. It can be a very effective marketing tool because these groups can quickly grow in numbers.

You’ll find a lot of advertising on Facebook now. Some methods you will notice very easily while others may be more subtle, but social network advertising continues to grow whether you “like” it or not.

This year, only a few months ago, Facebook came out with an iPad app! Many have been excited about the recent launch. Along with a mobile app, users are now able to do all their gaming and chatting and social networking on Facebook with their iPad as well. Before, social networkers had to always use their computers if they wanted do certain things on Facebook, but the new app allows them to do it all. Apple users may even enjoy a better experience if they’re using an Apple iOS device.

One main reason why Facebook apps didn’t work on a lot of phones is because iOS devices do not support Flash. One way Facebook brought a solution for this issue is they helped a select set of developers create HTML5 versions of many of their apps and game titles so it’ll work on mobile Web browsers. Unfortunately HTML5 doesn’t offer the same performance that a lot of complex apps require. However, if they created native versions of their apps, Facebook users can connect to FB directly from the native app. Now if you get to upgrade to an iPad or iPad 2 and have a Facebook account, it’s like a win-win situation. You’ll get access to lots of apps and a great Facebook experience, including chatting! Try using the emoticons on your new tablet! Enhance your networking and chatting even more.

Some people often wonder what is the difference between the two social networking sites: Facebook and Twitter. While both share some of the same purposes they are quite different. Layouts aren’t the only thing that set the two apart. While Facebook and Twitter have similarities, Twitter is described moreso as an “information network”. Sure the core of the two sites focus on profiles, relationships and newsfeed for the user’s experience, but people are using them each for different purposes.

When you become a friend with someone on Facebook, not only do you get to see their content but they gain access to yours in return. Twitter is different in this regard. On Twitter, one chooses what information he/she wants to receive and has no obligation to follow anybody. While Twitter emphasizes the actual content, Facebook emphasizes profiles and people.

So what is the difference between a social network and an information network? Sites like Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, hi5, and Bebo fall under the “social networking” branch of social media. Information networks, which are a more recent phenomenon, are about leveraging different networks to distribute and consume information. These types of networks include: YouTube, Digg and Flickr. Twitter is probably the best example of an information network. Just about every social media platform has aspects of both types of networks. The greatest difference between an information network and a social network is how users connect. Facebook uses a friend model while Twitter has a follow model. Content on information networks is public, while content on most of those social networks is private, mostly because of their subscription models.

PS – Only Facebook can use Facebook emoticons!
